Chapter Eight

Time was moving too fast. Before she knew it, Maureen was caught in a whirlwind of activities surrounding Grace’s graduation. The first item on the calendar was prom. Nowadays, getting ready for prom turned out to be a weeklong event. To start the week off, Grace and Maureen went together to pick up her gown. Grace had finally found the perfect one—a soft blue satin dress by Jessica McClintock. She just so happened to find it at the same dress shop Gabby had bought her wedding dress only a few years earlier.

Before taking the gown home, Grace tried it on for a final check. She came out of the dressing room with a smile that stretched across her face. She looked absolutely stunning.

Grace stood on the raised platform where she could see herself in all the angled mirrors. The long gown had a modest halter top with a low back, fitted tightly through the waist and flaring to the floor. Silver heels peeked out from underneath the hem. Grace twirled and watched the fabric float around her.

Maureen took a deep breath, trying to find words to articulate how beautiful her daughter looked.

“You look breathtaking,” she finally said.

“Thanks, Mom. Do you think Brandon will like it?” Grace replied as she held her hair up and then swooped it to one side, mentally deciding how she would wear it on prom night.

“More than your father will appreciate, I’m afraid,” Maureen said as she winked at Grace. “Now go on, you better get changed. We still have so much to do before Friday night.”

Grace came out of the dressing room a few minutes later in her jeans and sweater, ready for the next stop. With the dress hung safely in the backseat, they left for the florist to choose the boutonniere for Brandon’s tux. He would be wearing a black suit with a white shirt and a blue tie and pocket accent for a pop of color to match Grace. In my day, the whole tux would be baby blue. What were we thinking? Maureen giggled at the thought.

At the florist, they choose a white rose with a blue edge for Brandon’s tux. The place was jam-packed with girls choosing their dates’ flowers and moms ordering corsages for their son’s dates. Maureen glanced to her left and saw Brandon’s mom, Stefanie, ordering flowers for Grace. Uh oh, Maureen thought as she intercepted Grace picking out her own flowers and shuffled her out the door to go home.

“But Mom! I just wanted…” Grace protested as she was being moved out the door.

“Nope, move along. Trust me; it is well taken care of, I’m sure. Moms have a special way of knowing these types of things,” she said cryptically. Grace looked at her mom—who had a Cheshire Cat smile on her face—and gave in.

The next morning Maureen, Grace, and Rose all piled in the car and headed out at 9 a.m. for the salon with plans for a nice lunch afterwards. They had appointments to get their nails and toes done.
